Brightidea directly integrates one of the most popular Enterprise search solutions available- the latest SOLR search technology- into the entire platform to provide users with real-time indexing for fast, accurate search.
Getting Started
System Admins can configure how they would like the global search bar to function under System Setup > Site > Global Navigation.
There are three options to choose from:
- Show Personalized Quick Results with Search- Use predictive technology to suggest personalized user-specific results as terms are entered
- Show Recently Viewed Items- Quick Results will suggest a list of recently viewed items to users prior to searching
- Only Allow Search- No personalized results will be suggested; search results will populate as terms are entered in the search bar
Quick Search vs Advanced Search
When choosing one of the first two aforementioned options that enables search result suggestions, there are two views when searching from the Global Navigation within Brightidea:
- Quick Results is a simpler view that displays matching and/or suggested results in a single list:
- Advanced Search provides a more robust display that organizes results by type for easy locating:
- System and Initiative level searches parse multiple fields, including:
- Idea Titles
- Idea Code
- Idea Description
- Submission Form Questions
- Initiative Titles
- Blog Posts
- Users (Screen name and/or email)
- Note: Only Admins can search by email. Email addresses are not displayed in results.
- Tags
- Statuses
The Quick Results view is not a comprehensive list and will only suggest items that a user has previously viewed. In order to see the full list of search results, use the View all search results for [search term] option at the bottom of the dropdown or press Enter on your keyboard.
Searching at the Initiative Level
Admins can also determine the type of results users may receive when searching at the Initiative level under Site Setup > Site > Enterprise. There are 2 settings that will affect the global search function:
- Include other Initiatives in search results- This option allows users to search all Initiatives in the system to which they have access. Disabling this option will limit results to matches within the Initiative.
- Limit user search results to this Initiative- This option hides the Initiative from search results for all users not included in the Initiative's access group
- Users will see the Initiative name in the search bar that indicates they are searching the individual Initiative only:
- If users would like to search at the System level instead, they can close the Initiative search by selecting the "X" or simply pressing the backspace on their keyboard. Pressing Enter on your keyboard will open the Initiative All Results page.
Important Notes:
- There is currently a 2-character minimum requirement for search terms to yield results
- Search logic does not respect "or" filtering
- Search for exact matches using when enclosed in quotes " "
- Exclude terminology by adding a - in front of the term
- Keyboard hotkeys can be used to access and navigate in search
- Access search with “/” or ⌘K or Ctrl+K
- Arrow Up and Arrow Down keys will navigate the search list when open
- The search feature has no “remove filter” functionality.
- Customization of the System search is currently supported.
- If a user is not a part of an access group for an Initiative, they cannot search for an Idea within that Initiative.
- If Admins do not select Allow all users to see extra questions, search results will be filtered out accordingly.
- User search results do not filter by any restrictions (Group or domain)
- Searching within a Community will only search Initiatives that are part of that Community.
Hi how can I use the search by idea code - is there an enterprise level report that lists the code? I only see idea id in the wbstorm detail report and this can't be searched on
Regards
Chris
Hi Chris,
You can search for the code by simply typing it in the search bar. E.g. D101
The code can be found directly on the idea or in the WebStorm Admin/Pipeline Idea list views.
Thank you,

Is it possible to restrict a search to a specific category?
Hi Chris,
Unfortunately, the search can not be restricted by category at this time. However, you can utilize of "category" widget to filter ideas by category if needed right on the idea list.
Let me know if you have any other questions about this.
Thanks,
Ron

Hi Ron,
Is there something I can do on a webstorm level to only search ideas within that webstorm? We have global nav on as well.
Thanks,
Stephanie
Hi Stephanie,
The best way to do this would be to select "Restrict Global Navigation user search results to this WebStorm's Access Group" under the Enterprise tab in WebStorm setup. When enabled users will not be able to search for ideas that are part of WebStorms they do not have access to.
Thanks,
Joe
